At its purest level, math is an artform. It may seem like a strange statement since most people think of math as being the polar opposite of art: there is a hidden beauty in the patterns that one can find through self-discovery. Ever since I can remember I have had a passion for math, but I felt limited by the resources around me. I always wanted to learn more but I didn't know where to turn to.
The school system follows a rigid and straight track that does not take advantage of our creativity. Often times, an example is explained and everyone repeats essentially the same problem until the routine is memorized. I believe that the best way for students to learn is to present a new problem and let them discover the answer by themselves. This builds a sense of wonder that only increases the desire to learn more. |
